Leadership is all about having influence and being intentional, using this definition, allows us to invite everyone to realize that they can lead.  At the Vineyard, we operate with an empowered leadership approach inviting everyone to consider that God is inviting them to have influence on others.

Ministry is not just about tasks to be done, it’s about relationships in the body. When Jesus called people into to ministry he asked them to“Follow me”... There was a discipleship role going on. Sometimes one of the biggest challenges we can face when we need to recruit people is forgetting or losing focus that when we call people to serve in ministry, what we are presenting is an opportunity for people to serve God.

Internationally known pastor and motivational speaker John Maxwell says this about leadership: "Leadership is influence." Using this simple definition of leadership invites everyone to realize that they can lead. All of us can exercise a certain degree of influence on someone, at some point, in some place. Leadership isn’t about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It’s about one life influencing another.

In other words, leading is taking people from where they are to where God wants them to be. Doing this - influencing people and moving them from their agenda in life to God’s agenda takes intentionality.

Paul wrote about leaderships being intentional and having influence in Ephesians 4:11-13: "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Our Approach

The pastoral staff at the Vineyard would like to invite anyone interested in helping us reach the heart of Ann Arbor by attending an upcoming Vineyard Leadership Incubator.

Vineyard Leadership Incubators are designed to bring together lots of ideas, approaches, skills into one place to wrestle with the invitation to help people identify their unique gifts and talents and understand how these gifts can be used to help ourselves and others grow in our relationship with God. We have discovered that the best training structure for emerging leaders is an incubator.  

We use these incubators as an opportunity to help us learn about and discover how your unique gifts and talents can be used in our mission to our community. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Donnell Wyche.

Leadership Expectations

Leaders are responsible to help set the pace for what we believe Jesus wants us to become as a church of disciples following him. That calls for commitment on our part--to him and by extension, to his church and his cause.

Our responsibility as leaders is closely aligned with the responsibilities of membership that we discuss with new members in our class, Belong. These responsibilities are also reflected in our church by-laws.

  1. Leaders are responsible to participate in the life and worship of the church. The author of Hebrews says, "Don't neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some..."
  2. Leaders are responsible to participate in the financial support of the life and mission of the church.
  3. As leaders we have a responsibility to pursue the growing edge of the disciple's path.
  4. As leaders we have a responsibility to pursue integrity in our personal relationships.
